Other Info

Registration Information about NHD-California is here May 10-12, 2019

Here are Key Dates to Know

  • Elementary Division Judging & Awards on Friday (5/10)
  • Junior Division Preliminary Judging on Friday (5/10)
  • Senior Division Preliminary Judging on Saturday (5/11)
  • Jr. / Sr. Division Awards on Sunday (5/12)

Here are the next steps you have to determine:

1. Now that you have determined you will attend NHD-CA, will you Compete or Participate?

If you are going to “compete” then that means redoing and improving your project based on the judging sheets and feedback from your history day coaches. The good news is that you have until April 17 (Papers, Websites and Documentaries) or May 9 (Exhibits, Posters and Performances) to improve your project.

  • Review your judging score sheets
  • Ask your teachers for feedback about your project. Talk with your families about your project.
  • Make a list of things you want to do to improve your project and share that with your parent or teacher. Create your “History Day Improvement Plan” document.
  • If you would like another set of eyes on your 2-page paper or Annotated Bibliography, you can email that to Rob Darrow, Alameda County History Day Coordinator.
  • Increase your primary sources and interviews with experts about your topic.
  • Talk with your school or public librarian about the primary source documents you are needing.
  • Go to a university library and talk with them about finding the primary source documents you are looking for.

3. By March 20: Register for NHD-CA ($95 per student) and make your lodging reservations. See info on website: www.nhdca.org/statecontest

To register online (similar to County History Day registration):

  • A parent/guardian must complete parts of the registration.
  • Name of your School, District, County your school resides in
  • Your History Day Teacher's name
  • Medical Insurance Provider Name, Policy Number, Family Doctor's Name
  • Group Members names - if it is a group entry
  • Website entries will need to know your website URL: Weebly username and password
  • Payment: Registration fee is $95 per student. Registration fee is paid by school or family. Indicate this when registering.
  • If no teacher, you can use Rob Darrow, County Coordinator, as your teacher, but let him know (robdarrowhistoryday@gmail.com

5. Continue to improve your project. Your families, history day teachers, history day coordinator and county history day judges are here to help. We are happy to review your updated project, etc.  Our County History Day judges are happy to re-view your historical papers, websites or documentaries.

Parent Information about the NHD-CA Schedule

Attending NHD-CA can be done in many ways.

-       Drive up and complete your interview/performance/documentary; if qualified for finals, then documentaries and performances present again in evening.

-       Stay for the entire weekend and view other documentaries/performances/exhibits

-       In between interviews and finals, spend time viewing documentaries, performances and exhibits or drive to Sacramento to view the Capitol or various museums (start thinking about topics for next year’s history day topic).

The time commitment at NHD-CA are as follows based by project:

-       Paper and Websites: One 15 minute interview (no finals interview)

-       Exhibits and Posters: One 15-minute interview (no finals interview – exhibits and posters in finals have to remain for finals judging, others can be removed after public viewing)

-       Documentary and Performances: 20-minute preliminary presentation and interview. Those in finals will present their performance or documentary again (no interview).

-       (Optional) – Attend Awards Ceremony on Sunday to receive medals and special awards and attend National History Day meeting if in the top 2 or 3 in the state. Registration for NHD takes place.
